3.    Did you always want to be an author?
  No, I wanted to be a famous ice skater or a famous swimmer. I pirouetted and slid all over the waxed kitchen linoleum and did fancy backstrokes in the bathtub.
   
  4.    How did you first get published?
  I wrote a picture book and came to New York with a list of potential publishers. I called everyone on the list, asking for an appointment. Golden Books published that first picture book, “Stevie’s Tricycle.” They also published “Tommy’s New Bed,” my second picture book.
   
  5.    What do you like about writing a book?
  I like being in a character’s head and being surprised by something they do. Suddenly there it is written, totally unexpected. It is so real to me that I forget I made up the character.
